Wild Pigs Canada
Canada’s New Tool for Invasive Wild Pig Prevention –
Wild Pigs Canada Website
We’re excited to announce the official launch of the Wild Pigs Canada website — a new platform dedicated to helping people understand and respond to the issue of invasive wild pigs in Canada. This new online hub was developed by Invasives Canada and Animal Health Canada in collaboration with the Invasive Wild Pig Leadership Group.
Pigs are a Growing Concern
Invasive wild pigs are one of the most destructive invasive species on the planet. From damaging agricultural lands to spreading disease and degrading ecosystems, wild pigs cause billions of dollars in damage and control costs every year across North America.
These animals adapt easily to new environments, reproduce rapidly, and learn to avoid humans, making them difficult to remove from the landscape.
In Canada, the impacts of invasive wild pigs are felt mostly in the prairies. Some populations of invasive wild pigs are considered to be established in areas within Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. An “established” population means pigs exist in the wild without dependence on humans for food or shelter.
Although pigs aren’t yet established in all provinces and territories, they can spread quickly. Any pig, including Eurasian wild boar, farm pigs, pet pigs, or hybrids, outside of a fence and not under control by a person is considered an invasive wild pig and should be reported. Reporting sightings and responding early to new populations is an important part of preventing further spread and damage.
“While established invasive wild pig populations exist in some regions, we still have an opportunity to prevent their spread and protect our habitats, ways of life, and industries across Canada.”
– Rebecca Lord, Executive Director, Invasives Canada.
A National Response to a National Problem
The Invasive Wild Pig Leadership Group brings together experts and officials from across jurisdictions to support the implementation of Canada’s Invasive Wild Pig Strategy 2022–2032. The strategy provides national guidance to prevent, control, and eradicate invasive wild pigs in Canada.
Wild Pigs Canada is the result of a collaboration between Invasives Canada, Animal Health Canada and the Invasive Wild Pig Leadership Group. The website delivers on a key action of the strategy: to raise awareness and enable the public and interest groups to take action through a user-friendly, accessible platform.
Wild Pigs Canada
Wild Pigs Canada will act as a national hub to support action and coordination on invasive wild pigs across the country. On the website you’ll find:
- Identification & Reporting resources: Learn how to recognize pigs, tracks, nests, and wallows—and how to report sightings in your province or territory. This section includes links to Squeal On Pigs, an awareness campaign that encourages individuals to report pig sightings. Reports can be made through the Squeal on Pigs! app, website, or regional reporting links.
- Impact Overview: Understand how wild pigs threaten biodiversity, cultural resources, agriculture, and even public health.
- What You Can Do: Resources tailored to pet pig owners, farmers, hunters, and Indigenous communities.
- What Canada is Doing: Explore current efforts across provinces and territories to trap, monitor, and remove invasive wild pigs from the landscape.
“Wild Pigs Canada is a tool designed to equip and empower individuals and organizations to take action by learning about invasive wild pigs, how to identify them, prevent their spread, and to report any signs or sightings within their region.”
– Rebecca Lord, Executive Director, Invasives Canada.
Whether you’re a landowner, farmer, or concerned individual, Wild Pigs Canada offers you tools and knowledge to support action on invasive wild pigs.
